Everyone surfing for last-minute Halloween costumes and pictures of black Lolcats today—what you might call the 40th anniversary of the Internet—can give thanks to the simple network message that started it all: "lo."

On October 29, 1969, that message became....

The Internet has served us well, but it is time for it to die to make room for the Internet 2. Our current Internet has reached it's max speeds because most of the Internet is still using phone lines. Internet 2 will be made up of Fiber-Optic lines, which will give speeds up to 100GBs.

Grill, you know the backbone of the internet now is all run with fiber optic lines.  Although, I would like to maybe read some hardcore facts about Internet 2.0, do you have a link or something?

I wonder if after they typed the "g" and it crashed - did the red lights under the switches spell out "send report?"

That's right, children, the very first computers - the ones you could build at home - used a series of 16 switches (=16 bits) that you turned on or off (1's and 0's) and the hit "load" to program your "word" (two bytes), and you kept doing that over and over until your whole program was loaded, then you hit the switch "run" and hoped it worked, or you started over.  When you turned it off you had nothing, just a box with switches and lights.

Ah the good old days
