I just pre-ordered via Steam. I'm not sure I'm gonna play the game but I'll at least give it a whirl.

They will have dedicated servers but only rentable servers from a few hand picked providers...and they are about 5 times the cost of a regular game server.

Guys, the server situation is not a big deal. My friend and I still play 2142 and we have a great time on other people's servers.

Depending on how many people in BPN actually get the game and how often they play it we may be inclined to rent a ranked BC2 server.

Actually it does not matter on the game as much as it does the Friends that you are playing with!! If I can not play with Friends I usually lose interest real quick LOL I will probably be getting the new Bf game

The requirements do seem a bit steep, and it also supports DX11, so this might be the game i upgrade to an nvidia 3xx for. who knows!

Well I'll be getting the nVidia 395 when it comes out in May but it won't be because of this game. I just wish they'd release the cards already...I don't quite understand why they would release the mainstream cards before they regain their title as the best of the best???

I was seriously thinking about getting the game, but after you mentioned this, I am inclined NOT to, just for that reason. I don't understand the logic behind having dedicated servers but not releasing the code publicly. Instead, they will gouge the average Consumer a little more.

Yeah, that is the way Battlefield has always done it, all of the Battlefield games are like this. Now typically they will release the public "unranked" server files...but who wants to play on unranked? They do it this way because they don't want the servers to be hacked or to allow hackers. I say they could just institute a very tight release to people who have applied, been heavily validated and have signed an agreement stating what they don't want to happen under penalty. Then sue the folks who aren't doing the right thing.

Anything can be hacked if it is released even partially to the public. What is stopping a host provider from hacking the source files? Nothing if you ask me. I don't buy it quite honestly. I really see this as another opportunity at increasing profits. The only way to keep it secure would be if the makers of BF (I guess it's activision?) ran it on their own servers, thus restricting access to everyone. The game makers have blamed their prices on games for years on hacking and theft, which, in my opinion, is only a portion of the problem. The simple fact is, they do it because they know people will pay, and all of us are included! Simple supply and demand; they know X million people will buy the game upon initial release, which is typically why I never do that, and wait for the game to be out a few months, and for the price to drop. I have not, a NEVER will, pay extra for any game just to play on-line (one reason for getting a PS3 over the xbox 360).
I would agree that they could take other means but why bother? They would be utilizing their own resources at policing all the servers, and going after those who do not comply...this way, they get some extra cash and let the host providers do all the work! The whole thing reeks in my opinion! It's a shame but unfortunately the way it is. I really don't see why it is an issue; we can host our own css servers etc, and play ranked matches and everyone assumes that the people playing are honest - that works so far doesn't it?

Battlefield is put out by Electronic Arts and was developed by DICE. I hear your point, people are going to hack and steal no matter what. So why penalize the good people?

Schlup, based on the voting for BC2 on the main page, is it a good assumption BPN will be renting a server? It is a shame about the dedicated servers not being ranked - Ridiculous I say!!

If we rent a server it WILL be ranked. We'll have to see how many people actually like the game after playing the beta. Basically the server will have to be used heavily if we are going to rent one...
