So tonight I was 4-wheeling around in the snow with my 2000 Lincoln Navigator. I got stuck in a large snow drift so I first switched the knob to 4x4 (it has AWD, 4x4, 4 Low), then shifted to neutral and switched the knob to 4 low, then I slammed the gas to the floor and knawed through the snow to get out (I could have just backed up but that isn't any fun), so anyways, I get out of it stop in the middle of the street shift back to neutral turn the knob first to 4x4, then when the light changed I switched back into AWD. Put the petal down again and I heard a huge bang from back where the transmission is. I was able to drive about a half mile until I lost all accelaration it it would not go. I can shift into 1st, 2nd and reverse and it works fine, I also can turn off overdrive and shift to drive and it works fine. But when I shift into drive with overdrive on it won't go at all, won't even go with 4 wheel drive on. Anybody know what the issue is? Am I going to need to get a new transmission?

I think it is a problem between the steering wheel and the gas pedal Honestly have no idea but doesn't sound very promising. You still have warranty?

I bought it at a out of town dealership many years ago...warranty has run out. I guess I'll just take it in to a local transmission place.

Bummer. With any luck it isn't anything too serious or heavy on the pocket book. The 4X4's can get pricey when they break. Good luck.

I'm not certain about those vehicles made by that four-letter "F" word - 'Ford', but in Canada, where 4X4's are very common, we have found that when the four-wheel drive is only engaged occasionally, there is an uneven wear issue. The transmission synchronization is subsequently affected. I hope this is not the problem with your vehicle.

Well I'm gonna take it in this week and have a couple of different people check it out. I got some good leads from some folks at work, I'll even get a friend discount from one guy!

Overdrive clutch went out, something else that moves fluid around went out. Transmission has to be completely re-manufactured and rebuilt. It's expensive!

Bummer - I figured it would be pricey.....sometimes you can get a whole new transmission from a junkyard and save a bit of cash but it's the labor that empties your wallet. She'll ride like new again though, so stay out of the snow banks!
