hey schlup i just wanted to run a question by you i know you know your computer stuff, if anyone else has input feel free to throw it out there. the computer i have isnt custom or anything but i was reading up on the motherboard specs for it and this is what it says.... btw my computer is a Gateway AMD Althon X2 7750 dual core

•Southbridge: SB700

System Bus Support HT3 / HT1

here is a link to what other computer from gateway use this motherboard, if you click on the FX one listed on here it says it uses this same motherboard but uses a 125 watt CPU

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=22002&dscr=Foxconn%20(Bengal)%20RS780%20Motherboard%20BIOS%20Update&&uid=258654659&uid=258654659

here are the specs for that 125 watt cpu quad core

Processor AMD Phenom X4 quad-core

L2 Cache Count 4
L3 Cache Size 2048 KB

so my question is it says it supports a AMD Phenom™ (95 W), so couldnt i just upgrade the CPU? i was looking at newegg and theres like 4-5 different ones so before i buy one i just wanted to get some advice on which one to get. also there computer is nothing special so i was thinking of getting a grahpic card now because i plan on building a new rig within the next 6 month so im looking for a good card under 175 so any feedback would be great Smiley thanks for reading

This is what  thought would work what do you think

graphic card
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5551857&CatId=3585

CPU which CPU should i get???

or do you think upgrading this computer is pointless and i would just build a new rig?

THanks, William

You could get the card you specced here for cheaper...this would be a fine gfx card to hold you over until your new build in 6 months.

For CPU I would get a Phenom II, they are based on the new 45nm manufacturing process and will run faster and more efficent.  Here's the one I have:

You can easily OC it to 3.3GHz too.

the 95 watts you are referring to is the motherboards TDP, basically it's power capabilities.  The motherboards voltage regulators and outputs are rated up to a certain amount, and if you use a CPU that is too demanding or you try overclocking too far, you could run into some real problems.

im assuming you want to stay AMD? itll be a lot cheaper than intel Smiley

I've never been a big fan of sli, nor did i know there were any AM3/SLI mobos on the market, but i found this one which looks promising http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130235

Heres your best buy for a processor right now http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103674&cm_re=955-_-19-103-674-_-Product

I can vouch for the mobo you chose, mine is the same one minus the onboard GPU.  I havent had any problems so far, it looks slick, and overclocks like a champ

Oh I'd say either one...6 in one hand, half dozen the other.  They are about equal specs...

My recommendation would be to spend a little more money on the graphics card and get something better...like the 5870...
