At CeBIT this week, the lads at TechPowerUp have spotted what Patriot claims is the fastest system on the planet.

At its core the system is operating on  a SuperMicro X8DTH-6F-O motherboard with dual Xeon W5550s and a modest 48GB of ECC DDR3-1333 memory (PS34G13ER-E). Harnessing the power of 40 256GB Patriot TorqX SSDs strung together with five LSI Mega-Raid SAS PCI-E cards, the system is able to produce a sustained 155,000 IOPS/s.

A unique example of just how powerful this setup is – as explained by the Patriot reps – while a typical Blu-Ray video may take 2-3 hours to rip on a regular PC, the Patriot system can do this in 0.9 seconds.

Granted the display is purely for show, given that the entire system has a roughly $60,000 price tag.

So, how long will it be until we all have desktops with that kind of performance?

Well, as for the enthusiasts we have I'd say maybe 5-10 years, average folks will never have that kinda power, servers will start to see it pretty quick.

Yeah, but if they wanted to make it for gaming don't you think they would have put about (12) 5970's in it and it would be a monster!  They could do it with PCIe risers.
