OK, so all considering I had quite the kick a* rig. Well all the BSOD's and hard resets that were required due to BC2 issues I was facing are now forcing me to get a new computer. When I try to power everything on it doesn't happen, the signal isn't being sent through the motherboard. When I unplug everything but the motherboard, it receives a signal but throws a dead code and the power supply just screams.

Ohh well...here is the new setup once I get it:

  • AMD Phenom II x4 965
  • ASUS M4A79T
  • G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (4x2GB) DDR3 1333
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 92mm
  • Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750 Watt PSU

I will still have the Radeon HD 5870 and the SB XFi XtremeGamer cards in this rig.

-Malhovic out...for the count...until Monday or Tuesday next week. :-(  Cry

Wow, so maybe it wasn't the game that was causing the BSOD's, it was probably just bad timing with the mobo.  Well, we'll see you when you get back.

Yea, that is HIGHLY possible and the BSOD's just pushed it over the edge. At least I am getting quite the nice gaming rig for less than $800.

Seems like a great rig but i would've gone with the Gigabyte MOBO with USB 3.0

I thought about going the Gigabyte route but decided in the end to just head on with the ASUS board due to the trusted reviews I read. Plus I am not too concerned with USB 3.0 at this point considering I don't plan on adopting it anytime soon. I can always get a PCI-E USB3.0 card if I need one.

I would have got the MSI Big Bang Fusion
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130259
with the Lucid Hydra chip on it.  Then you could perfectly load balance a GTX 495 card and a ATI 5970 card running together with the full capabilities of both cards, not like the only partial results you get with SLI or Crossfire.

This is my queue to blab about the i7 920 and why I think it's superior. That's all in another thread though.  I'll just post a link.
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0302727

That MSI board is pretty nice, too.  Wouldn't mix with the 920, though, so I guess you'd have to get an i5!
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0317379

I have a microcenter just about 5 or 10 minutes from me house.  It's great.  It's packed full of stuff and it's prices are generally about 10% cheaper than new egg...except for the 920 which is 31% cheaper.

I saw some benchmarks of that motherboard a couple weeks back, and it didnt do too hot. You can successfully mix ATI and nVIDIdia cards together, but there is virtually no substantial performance gain, making the price irrational.  It would be epic if it worked though ;/

The 920 is socket 1366, while that MSI board is the newer socket 1156

I just read a swath of reviews and benchmarks, it does quite well, but we have to understand that they all came out back in November '09 and there were some driver issues at that time.  I would assume it works much better now though I haven't seen a current benchmark to prove that.  It still beats SLI or Crossfire however you look at it...not by as much as one would expect but it gets the job done.

At this point I am going strictly SLI and considering the fact of the cost on an i7 plus the mobo, you can't compete with the bundle I got for a total of $750 shipped.

As for mixing cards, I don't plan on it, nor do I plan on running SLI/dual GPU cards anytime soon considering my budget :-/

Uhh, did you not hear about the strike going on at all the UPS shipping centers in New York?  Looks like you may be waiting longer than you anticipated.

OK. At this point in time I am finally calming down a bit since I have reserved the fact that I have to wait, but still is an annoyance.

I know how you feel waiting for the parts of a new build.  I just don't think about it and then one day the package is just on my door step and I'm surprised!

Yeah after your break-in period you could just use the ASUS built in OC to get to 3.8GHz, I was thinking you were stock clocked to 3GHz for some reason...

GA, I can't get the RMA considering how it broke. Plus I kinda threw it while laying on the ground. Ohh well, I am going to keep the current OEM AMD cooler for now. It idles around 37°C and when I ran the burn in for 1 pass just to see its temps it hit 62°C. Considering what I am doing with it, the Graphics are what is getting hit the hardest most of the time, playing BC2 last night was interesting. You could hear my GPU Fan kick up a step or two once in a while. Was kinda funny.

After getting everything all set and in place, when I turned the computer on the fan wouldn't spin on the aftermarket cooler. I plugged in my old cooler and the fan worked. So I determined that the fan was dead, well as/after I removed it I "kinda" chucked it at the garbage...oops.
