QuakeCon 2010

WHAT: QuakeCon is a free convention held yearly in Dallas, Texas brought to you by id Software, Bethesda Softworks and their parent company ZeniMax Media Inc.. Thousands of gamers gather in one location to play with their friends on a giant gaming network, see the latest in cool technology, hear about upcoming games and compete in world-class tournaments.
WHO: Fans of computer and videogames. The event is FREE to all attendees thanks to the support of id and Bethesda as well as the QuakeCon volunteer staff and the 2010 event sponsors and exhibitors.
WHEN: August 12-15, 2010
WHERE: Hilton Anatole Hotel - Dallas, Texas
WHY: Play in world-class tournaments, meet and interact with game developers, be the first to learn new information about upcoming computer and videogames and have the opportunity to frag with friends on QuakeCon’s massive Bring Your Own Computer network.

Last year me and my son went to this event for the first time and absolutely loved it. Over 3,000 gamers are there with their computers for 4 days of 24/7 gaming. If you want to bring your computer then you must register to reserve a spot. There are normally some very large corporate sponsors (Id, nVidia, AMD, etc) and the swag given out is tremendous (thousands of dollars of processors, cases, gaming pads, tshirts, etc).

Id will be releasing some news on the upcoming Doom 4 at this event.

Overall, quite an enjoyable event.

We were there for only a few hours on 2 days but we ended up with 14 t-shirts with BRINK on it and 2 OCZ gaming mousepads. We could never get near the front where the AMD processors were being handed out or the cases. They give out raffle tickets at the door and they randomly call out numbers every few minutes to give out the expensive gear like whole computers systems, motherboards, cases, etc.

They also have some case modding workshops with some pros. This is where I learned more on cutting a window in a case.

Ventrilo gave away a 2010 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Coupe (worth over $52,000)!  Shocked

Wolfenstein was due to be released the week after the event and there were multiple systems set up around the event with the game on it. Everyone was playing it.

This year we will be more prepared and be there for all 4 days! We are even looking to become a volunteer and help set up the event the 2 days prior.

Oh yes, BAWLS was there also and a case was only $20. Many people had over 10 cases sitting at their gaming computers. This year, I don't know. I heard that BAWLS filed for bankruptcy.

In fact, there were quite a few lady gamers there. Some were with their boyfriends but there were many single ones also. These types of events are the Woodstock of the PC gaming community. Everyone just having fun talking/playing computer games. It really is a fun time.

I would love to be able to make it to this, but I know I won't be able to this year. I have been trying for 3 years to get over and attend Digital Overload (CAD Comics Convention in Rhode Island) but am still waiting for that experience. My biggest LAN thus far was 22 people, that was a good time in the basement of a friend of mine.
