Well, I spent the morning playing with the overclock settings of my main computer and the results seem positive.

CPU
CPU Core Speed from 2785.9 MHz to 4000.8 MHz
Bus Speed from  132.7 MHz to 190.51 MHz
QPI Link from 2387.9 MHz to 3429.24 MHz

Memory
NB Frequency from 2122.6 MHz to 3048.4 MHz
DRAM Frequency from 530.7 MHz to 762.1 MHz

Here is a link to my CPU-Z results:
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1062642

To the left is a link to my 3DMark Vantage score for this setup.

What should I do to perform a stress test to ensure the system is stable?

Wow, that's an incredible overclock Navy! You should run the Intel Burn Test to verify stability, run it at least 10 cycles to make sure you are very stable.

Thanks! I downloaded the Intel Burn Test v2.4 and will run 10-cycles on it tomorrow afternoon to stress the system.

What is the stress level to use (standard, high, very high, maximum)?

No problem with the OC's GA! I had a good time doing it. Remember to give me a call/text when you know we can head out to eat.

I put my system back to normal specs (unclocked).

It passes the Intel Burn Test at the Very High settings for 10 passes with no problems. The situation that I do not like are the temps during this testing period. I used the CPUID Hardware Monitor and was surprised that the temps were so high (42 idle and 92 max). That is a 50 degree shift and way too high.  Shocked

I have the Corsair H50 water cooled CPU cooler but it appears not to make a difference.

I will have to do more research to find the settings that will enable the system to go faster while keeping the temperature down.

You won't hit those temps in regular scenarios.  Intel Burn Test gets the temps as high as they can possibly go.  The max recommended temp of the i7 920 is 100 degrees, so as long as you stay below that you're alright.

I do believe you just let it run
so it can keep folding for the cause
as far as the points I would believe
that you do not lose them when you shut
your system down or turn the folding off

I believe it's like 72 degrees celcius, could be wrong though...

Edit: Looked it up and it's 65 degrees celcius max.

Yeah, you just run it all the time, you can shut it down when you are using your computer or gaming.  When you restart it the program will resume where you left off as long as you don't let it lapse more than a day.

according to AMD's website its 62*C, but that sounds low so my guess is thats the temperature the processor starts degrading in performance and putting out errors, and not a thermal shutdown.

Not to burst your bubble but it's unlikely that you'll get much higher if any clock speeds with water.  And the reason I say that is because you aren't having temp issues now. The only time that water cooling will help you achieve higher speeds is if you can crank up the speeds and it runs stable, just runs way too hot, way over manufacturers max temps.  If you can get to that scenario then I say go for it, but I wouldn't waste my money on WC unless it was needed.

The truth is if you decide to clock higher than that you'll have to increase voltage which will increase temps by a measurable amount for each bump, you'll just have to clock it higher and get it stable and see what the temps are doing...

    Core 2 Quad Q9650 @3.0GHz FSB 1333MHz

    Overclocked:
    3.87GHx FSB 1720MHz

I originally had it OC'd to 4.05GHz, but that failed a 5-cycle test on the third cycle.  Been reading some OC forums and people have been saying that they were stable at 4.05 so maybe it's something on my end.

I have an energy saver program so when the PC does not need to be at full capacity, the CPU speed will drop to stock speeds or even less.  I've seen it drop to 2.70GHz while idling.
