So California Kid asked me last night about his PSU.  He said that when he turned the power off on his computer that the PSU fan continued to run.  The only way he could get the PSU fan to stop running was to unplug the whole machine or flip the switch on the PSU.  At first I was thinking that he somehow hooked up a constant power cable to the PSU but then remembered that it was the PSU itself that was having the issue and that you don't connect any power cables to it.  The only explanation I could think of was that he had a faulty PSU and that he should RMA it because eventually with it running 24/7 that fan would burn out.  Anybody else ever heard of this happening?  Have any other ideas?

That is a new one to me. My first guess would also be a faulty PSU. Replace it before it causes some other more expensive or critical unit to fail.

I'd try powering it off, then disconnecting the signal cable to the power and reset switches on the front and see if the fan turns off, then try unplugging every cable to see if the fan goes off....might be a mobo prob because the mobo sends the signal to the PSU as far as I know.

I was thinking tho, really, if all the voltages are correct, then really it isn't an issue if he just flicks the PSU switch on the back when it's off.  Technically that fan runs non-stop when powered on anyhow.

Well that's easy enough, I didn't realize it was that new.  I also got thinking, if it did it from day one, might even be a code bug in the bios.

I would start with what cygnus is suggesting with one modification, simply unplug the PSU from the motherboard via the 20+4 connector. That is where the signal comes from and if that is disconnected and he then plugs the power cable into the PSU and the fan kicks on it would be a faulty wiring job in the PSU. If the fan doesn't come on, plug in the 20+4 connector and see if it starts up.

If the 20+4 connection starts the fan, disconnect the 20+4 connector and remove the start, reset and both led connectors and then reconnect the 20+4. If the fan still jumps on it is 99% motherboard, if it doesn't kick on there is a short with one of the Start, Reset or LED header connections.
