I own an Alienware m15x, and its not too bad.  It definitely doesn't perform like a desktop, but its understandable seeing as its very thin and light.  My only recommendation is that if you get a laptop to game with go balls out on it, otherwise you will be sick of its performance in a year and regret not making it faster.  I spend about $2000 on mine, and its almost obsolete now.  I dont make a lot of expendable income so ill probably never buy a gaming laptop again lol.

Asus also makes a pretty cool laptop;  3d vision ready among other things.

Ya, you could probably build an m15x with those specs for around $2000.  I would recommend going with an ATI gpu, like a 5870 or 5850.  The nvidia gtx260M that a lot of laptops come with is a little aged.

I would recommend this:
Sager Notebooks NP8120

It comes with an 18.9" Screen, Dual GTX285's in SLI, an i7-920 and 8GB of ram for $3K.

This one stomps with the better i7 quad that has 8MB of cache (you'll notice the difference) plus it has dual SSD drives in RAID 0...this will give any desktop a run for it's money and comes in at $3000.  You can configure a little different if you wanted to save a little money.

Yeah, just go to the configurator and play around a bit...the above is how I would build it, but you might be different...
