It looks like the HIS Radeon 5970 wiped the GTX 480 off the board in most of the tests!

Bad Company 2 - 5970 had highest score
Far Cry 2 - 5970 had highest score
Dirt 2 - averaged out to about equal
Temperature - lower temp
Power Consumption - lower consumption

The GTX480 only managed to be 'average' in only one of the tests. All the rest belonged to the 5970.

To be fair the 5970 is a dual 5870...480 isn't supposed to compete with it, the GTX 495 will.

yea, I just did some research and found that the 5970 is dual-gpu and the GTX480 is single-gpu. Not really fair at all.

Two of the GTX480 in SLI should do nicely against the 5970. Now THAT is a test I would like to see.

At midnight tonight the NDA lifts for the U.S.  So we shall see some better benchmarks tonight, I'm looking forward to Tom's Hardware review and benches!

Good performance gains in SLI...it almost gets 100% gains in fps.  That isn't normal, typically you only get like 25%-50% gains.

My GTX275s in SLI rate higher than the GTX480 single card. I guess I should just wait for the GTX495 since it will be a dual GPU card.

And it will only get better as drivers are tightened up and optimized!

Bit-tech.net now has a review of the 480 up.
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2010/03/27/nvidia-geforce-gtx-480-1-5gb-review/1

It seems the only thing the 480 is doing consistently is topping the power consumption charts...

Well I read that incredibly long review.  There is good and bad in the GTX 480, unfortunately because they disabled 32 cores from the GTX 480 it simply performs WITH the 5870 and doesn't mop the floor with it.  Also, due to the PCI groups power limitations there probably won't be a dual GPU card which would be called the GTX 495 which would be the successor to the GTX 295...unless they are able to reduce power consumption in a BIG way.  This is a disappointment in many ways.  My hope is that nVidia will figure out a way to reduce power consumption, increase the core count to what it's supposed to be and create the dual GPU card, if they can do that, I will buy that card.

Cant they just add more 12V plugs to the card?

The only fault to this is that the GTX295s are DX10 and the GTX470/480s are DX11.

2 GTX480s would be cheaper, but you might need a new power supply

I'm not sure...don't know much about the PCIe groups rules.
