Looks like someone screwed up on the exhaust manifold...probably when adding a larger turbo to the GTi

Ya that sucks. I almost had that on my Honda Civic 06. I mod the car a a loose connection popped from the fuel injector and started to smoke up, but luckly i was near a garage and i got it fixed.

Brings back horrible horrible memories. I had an 88 Dodge Ram Charger 4X4 that happened to 3 days after getting it back on the road after riding my bike all spring and summer long and put it back on the road a few days before Halloween and it burned up on Halloween. Worse part was the fire dept would not go near in because it was full of ammo and it all started to go off. I miss that truck so much. Went everywhere in it and it always go me out. Lost $7000.00 worth of stereo equipment too. That's what I get for letting a Chevy dealer work on it. I HATE GM. Man now I can see it burning in my mind.
