This is a common issue that Bioware is now looking into. You can run the game from the exe in the binary folder, but it will have some major problems.

The links to these can be very hard to find on the http://masseffect.bioware.com/me1  site, so here are the direct links to the pages for Mass Effect 1 Patches and Bring Down the Sky.

Mass Effect 1 Patches (latest Patch is 1.02)

Bring Down the Sky

Note: the forum account you need to be logged into to download BDtS is an account at the old http://forums.bioware.com/ site.  If you don't already have an account over there enter the email address and password you used to sign up here on the sign-up page.  You account here is the "EA Account" its asking for.

You must register your Mass Effect CD Key with that account to get the CD key to install BDtS.  The registration page is http://accounts.bioware.com/my_account/mepc_cdkey.html

Thank you for trying to help Samarium. I gave Fallen remote access and he was able to find the problem. It seems that this is a know problem with Phenom chip sets as well as with some others. He had to get to the accessible files and create a shortcut to my desktop. Runs great now. Also thanks for the compliment. I borrowed Mas Effect 2 from a friend and it was enough to tell me that I wanted to get one so that I could follow the story line before I got any further into 2. Came at the right time as I just finished Dead Space last night. I will check out the forums later, right now I want to game.
