You can crack the LCD panel of a laptop and there not be any change in texture because there is a glass/plastic/whatever pane in front of it.

I've seen one opened before. It's just sheets of plastic in there.

not "just" sheets of plastic, between each sheet is a layer for each of the colors to be moved around through but for the most part, you're right.
