Ok, so 3DMark is the world renouned benchmarking software for computers.  I downloaded it and ran the tests and got the following results.

3DMark Score: P12548 3DMarks
CPU Score: 28862
Graphics Score: 10558

The results can be verified here...
http://service.futuremark.com/home.action?resultId=789042&resultType=19

I think I can get some better results mainly because I had several programs running in the background while I was running the benchmark...we'll see later on.

It's a very sweet test with some of the most amazing graphics I have ever seen.  I'll work on uploading the software to our downloads section since every mirror they had on their site was dirt slow downloading.  I'll let you all know when I get it uploaded and the link to download it as well in case anybody wants to see if they can beat my score.

Ok, this has been uploaded to our webserver.  You can download it here...
www.bulletproofnerds.com/uploadedfiles/downloads/3DMark_Vantage_v100_installer.exe

I look forward to finding out what everybody's scores are so download the software, run it and post your scores in this topic!

Note: You must be running Windows Vista for 3DMark Vantage...if you are running XP you should use 3DMark06 instead.  I am currently uploading that software as well.  Should have a like up by tomorrow.  Good luck!

Well I ran it again with nothing running in the background but it didn't make much difference...picked up a few points overall, gained in CPU and lost some points in graphics.  Here are the results.

So do you think your processor is your bottleneck?  Thanks for posting.

it for sure is. its a 2.2 dual core running at a front bus of 333mhz. its over 9 years old. yes its still fairly respectable and runs decent but for performance of todays API's it wont cut it. Ram is also another bottleneck here. this card runs neck and neck with Nvidias GTX 280. but it also all depends what the game is. openGL or Direct3d. some games the HD4870 wins, some the GTX280 wins. but both are pretty much neck and neck. BUt my father is looking to buy the same card or the HD4870. he is running my old system. i pretty much gave it away to him when i joined the services. Quadcore Q6600 oc'd to 2.8 with 8 gigs of Patriot Viper Gaming Ram. when he gets it ill have to have him run some scores for ya =] but i will be getting my Phenom Soon =]

Yeah honestly the Intel Extreme 965 is about 30% faster than the Phenom II 940 but it's also about 4.5 times as much money.  I definatly think you need to get a second 4870...that would be good.  The Phenom II 940 overclocks way better than the 965 Extreme as well I think everything being equal the 940 has the potential to outperform the 965 Extreme but that is at max overclock running LN2.  Just depends on how much money you want to spend.  I couldn't justify spending $1000 on a processor though, no matter what.

Yeah, too bad the 4870 takes up two slots so you could only run 3 of them on this motherboard.  Unless you can find a sweet single slot video card...then you could run 6 of em!

Wow, didn't know they made them in single slots...although I would be a little concerned that they all fit due to the size of their heatsink and fans.

Just goes to prove that I'm an NVIDIA fan!

Hey, when you buy it...if you don't mind...click on the newegg link on the bottom left of the homepage to get to the site and make the purchase.  We get a referral for that.

http://service.futuremark.com/home.action;jsessionid=0710345BB4E027FD7B50373A2C0F0961

However, I think I can tweak it to get a better score.  Will post more later.

Here is my score before OC'ing my video cards:

3DMark Score
   P18075
CPU Score
   12984
Graphics Score
   20792

Here is after I tweaked my 2 5850s to 800 MHz Core/1175 MHz RAM/1.15V:

3DMark Score
   P19501
CPU Score
   13290
Graphics Score
   23099

Not much gain in my overall score. I guess I need to move on to my CPU too.

no you need phys x so get an nvidia card really helps with the cpu score when it runs the crash test thats a test on the cpu but with phys x the card helps to ati has havoc but its not even in the same ballpark as phys x
