How to make a DVI dummy plug

Radioshack apparently does not carry "75 ohm" resistors, but any resistors from ~50-150 ohms will work from what I understand. What I do know is that Radioshack carries 68ohm resistors and they do work.

Instead of using a VGA plug and then having to attach that to a VGA to DVI adapter--I couldn't foresee any reason why I couldn't just use a DVI to VGA adapter.....so, that's what I did:

As can be seen in the picture, I alternated the orientation of the actual ceramic resistors in order to create a "built-in" seperator or divider to help keep the leads from contacting each other.

So far its working Great!   I've rebooted with the dummy installed and got exactly what I needed:

wow, that looked like such a simple fix! very nice.
Do those resistors get really hot though?  I dont know what kind of voltage the plug puts out, but 50-150ohm resistors seem small

Same here. The home office room is always the warmest in the house due to my computer mainly. This is nice in the winter since it feels so warm.

It is a different story in the summer. The room is upstairs and all the warm air is trapped up here. I generally move the computer downstairs in the summer since the ambient air is cooler than it would be upstairs. In Texas the summer days are easily in the upper 90s to low 100s. This combined with a computer that is working hard can lead to some extreme temps. On my next build (probably this summer) I am looking at setting up a water-cooled (WC) computer. I have several months of research and planning to do before I am ready for this. Plenty of time to see what new products come out.

Or you could just buy one here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/VGA-DVI-All-In-One-Dummy-Plug-for-Folding-Home_W0QQitemZ190384152135QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2c53c79e47#ht_682wt_1165

Very fair price, considering if you buy the DVI-to-VGA plug at Radio Shack (in case you don't have one lying around) the price of the plug is $13.50 or so.  You'd be into for about double the price as what this guys offering it for if you try to do it yourself.

So a heads up if any of you find yourself in a similar situation.

The computer that I have folding is headless (no monitor, remote access only).

Windows remote desktop tool disables GPU drivers and runs a slim down version so even if you have the dummy plug connected, you still can't run the GPU version.

I resorted to using a free account from LogMeIn.com and it works....

so expect some extra folding points from me and my (up until now useless) GeForce 9800 GTX.
