I'm sure many of you have never heard of the term "folding" in it's intended use here. I hadn't either until about a month ago.
What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
You can help by simply running a piece of software. Folding@home is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.
I have attached the software below so that you can download the folding client and help Team BPN help the world.

I turned on my old computer (Core 2 Duo with a GeForce 8800GT) and am folding it with a SMP and GPU client. My main computer does not even blink with the GPU client running in the background. I leave the older unit running 24/7 but my main one is turned on only when I am using it.

Yeah, if you make a bigger one I will upload it to our stats page at
Folding@Home...just make it the same size as the one in there. Also, you should link to the folding team stats page with your sig. So when you click on the picture it takes people to the BPN Stats page...if you need help with that let me know.

I modified my signature so that it now links to the BPN Folding Stats page.
I also emailed you a larger version (1024x248) for the BPN Folding Stats page. Let me know if you get it.

Nice work! I was looking at the stats page...how are you running 6 clients? The way I figure it you could run 4 between the two systems unless I am missing something. P.S. I got the graphic, thanks for doing it!

I think some of the clients were from some experimentation. I tried the normal CPU package and the SMP DEINO package to see what works. I am trying the SMP version over the weekend and the normal one has been removed. I am also doing the GPU package on this computer. So the 3 reported clients are really only 2. I did the same thing with my main computer. I ended up keeping the GPU going since it doesn't even slow it a little. I tried both versions of the CPU package and found that the SMP version slows the computer too much while gaming. The normal one is operating on this one but only when I am not gaming. So once again, the 3 reported clients are also only 2. It seems that the GPU versions are far superior in the awarding of points than the CPU versions. They also affect the system less and are quicker to complete. The CPU versions are slower and don't award many points. That is why I have a lot of Work Units (WU) completed but a low score.

Yes, this is all true, however, with the latest nVidia driver (the one that they took off because it was causing issues) has increased my GPU output about 150%!!!!

I have not removed the new driver yet so both machine's GPU must be cranking out the WU. How do I measure the output of the GPUs?

IDK, you'll just have to watch the stats page. I measured with the amount of time it takes to do each percent of a work load.

I looked at the Status > Logfile and can see that the GPU is completing 1% every 52 seconds.
The CPU version takes 14 minutes to complete 1%.
And these are on my older/slower unit. You have to love the GPUs!

I made a smaller folding signature to help reduce the graphics that are constantly being reloaded in the forums. It stills links to the folding stats page.

If you just installed the software then you will have to wait for it to complete a few work units for your name to show on the team roster.

The team ranking information looks good on the home page. Adding the code so that the text has color makes it a little easier to read. Just a thought.

I have decided to go ahead and get the GTX 480, I will then use the EVGA step up program when the GTX 495 is released.

Be careful with the EVGA Step-Up program. The eligibility period is only 90 days from purchase date and the step-up products are very limited. As of now the only graphic cards available to step up to are: - GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 - 55nm (896-P3-1255-AR) - GeForce 9800 GT (512-P3-N973-TR) - GeForce 9500 GT (512-P3-N954-TR) Not exactly top-of-the-line cards. I doubt that the GTX 495 will be a step-up possibility. Might be safer to either get two GTX 480 and SLI them or wait and get the GTX 495 when it is released.

That is only the current case because all of their cards are discontinued...they have eligibility for all products that they have stock of. Currently they only have stock of 9500, 9800, GTX 260. It will be updated when the 400 series is released.

I have to jump on the wagon for this. As soon as I get my OS reloaded (I am still running the trial version of win7 and need to install my true OS) so until I get around to doing it, no sense in loading it...I think it's great that BPN is helping out on this!
