Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant for Sophos, has announced the release of version 1.5 of the Sophos Anti-Rootkit tool for Windows based systems. The tool can run either from the command line or via its graphical user interface (GUI) and can searches for processes, registry entries and files which are not shown via normal Windows API calls. According to Cluley, the anti-rootkit tool is one of Sophos's most popular free tools based on its latest download stats.
The latest release of the free rootkit detection and removal tool adds support for disk and registry scanning on Windows Vista, Server 2008, Server 2003 SP2, Windows 7 and Windows 64-bit platforms. Should a user already have Sophos Anti-Virus installed, Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.5 will automatically use the virus data to generate a more specific threat report and will scan every file on the disk, as opposed to just the hidden ones.

The anti-rootkit tool requires 128 MB of RAM and supports 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, Server 2003 and Server 2009. Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.5 is available to download at no charge, but users are required to register their details first.
