Save your ranks and stats
Call of Duty 4 uses many different things to keep bandwidth down. One thing it does is store your ranks and unlocks on your harddrive. THATS RIGHT, YOUR harddrive.

Whats so bad about that? If you format your harddrive, you start over in rank and unlocks. YEAH FOR YOU!

What you want to do is save the username(s) in your PROFILE folder of the game. Burn it to CD or put it on another harddrive or USB drive, but make a copy of it.

If you dont have any other external backup:

1. Get out of the stone age. As cheap as it all is, you should.
2. At least make another copy of it elsewhere on your harddrive.

I would tell you the paths, but everyone installs it differently and the important thing is its in the PROFILES folder.

Crunch

Here is a program that automatically saves your CoD5 stats and stuff.  I have attached it for everyone's enjoyment and it is confirmed to work correctly.

When restoring the backed up information, where do I put it? (COD5) I see no profile folder anywhere.

EDIT: Nevermind, found it.

It goes here!

C:\Users\your name here\AppData\Local\Activision\CoDWaW\players\profiles

Thats for Vista and likely Windows 7, XP users should be able to figure it out though as it isn't a whole lot different.

Updated the backup file...something messed it up when we transferred servers.  I put a new file up and it is confirmed to be working now.

No problem, glad we could help!

P.S. Did anybody see what he did there?  Basuoct28 made his signature into a link to another website, which was inappropriate. (It's now been removed)  Pretty tricky there Basuoct28, I almost missed it myself.

mw2 stats are stored through steam. Confirmed, because i reformatted my other computer and when i got mw2 installed and logged in my level, guns, and achievements were there, no transferring of files needed.

Yeah, just need to make sure you can log back into steam and all of that is stored in the Steam Cloud.

My virus software alerted me to some malware when I unzipped that folder...

Your MW2 profile is saved two places. On your computer and on the Steam Cloud. The files on your computer override the files on the Steam Cloud. So this allows you to backup the files on your computer and restore your level.

Backing Up the Stats:
1. Create a folder on your desktop and name it "MW2 Profile Backup" and open it
2. Open up your Steam folder "\Program Files\Steam" for Windows 32-bit users and "\Program Files (x86)\Steam" for 64-bit users
3. Right-click the "userdata" folder and select Copy, and now paste it in the "MW2 Profile Backup" folder
4. Navigate your way to "\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2" in your steam folder
5. Right-click the folder named "players" and select Copy, and now paste it in the "MW2 Profile Backup" folder

Restoring the Stats:
1. Start Steam and log in, but do NOT start MW2
2. Open up the "MW2 Profile Backup" on your desktop
3. Open up your Steam folder as detailed above
4. Copy the "userdata" file from the "MW2 Profile Backup" folder and paste it in your Steam folder. When the prompt window pops up asking you if you want to replace select 'Yes'. Keep selecting 'Yes' until the process is complete.
5. Open up "\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2" in your Steam folder and then Copy over the "players" file from the "MW2 Profile Backup" folder and paste it in the "\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2" folder and again when the prompt windows pop up say 'Yes' to replace and keep selecting 'Yes' until complete.
6. To complete the process you still need to log in to MW2 and play a game before it will be permanent.
