Weapons and their attachments
CoD4 has 5 main "classes" of weapons and attachments to go onto the weapons. The attachments alters how the weapon functions and can determine how powerful a weapon will be.

These are the following classes:

Assault - medium to long distance fighting
Sub Machine Gun - Close to medium distance fighting
Light Machine Guns - Medium to long distance cover fire.
Shotguns - Close distance fighting
Sniper Rifles - Long distance fighting

The weapons for each class actually has been designed to do maximum damage at specific distances. An example; You are in a building moving from room to room with an assault weapon. If you were to run into someone around a corner with an SMG or shotgun, chances are you would lose the fire fight, as the assault weapon would be doing minimul damage as the other two classes would be near or at maximum damage.

Same scenerio but this time you see someone down the road. At that distance, the assault rifle would beat out the SMG and shotgun, as the other guns range is too far and their damage is degraded due to distance.

Each class has a "window" when it is doing the maximum damage. If you are before that window or after the window, the full damage is not being done.

The classes that has the longest window is the sniper rifle. The shortest window is the shotguns. The SMGs are between the shotguns and Assault rifles. The assault rifles are between the SMGs and the LMGs. The LMGs are between the assault weapons and the sniper rifles.

The LMGs suffer greatly from hip firing and very long reload times. With grip and sleigh of hand being used, the LMGs are very powerful weapons.

The attachments for each weapon does different things to it:

Silencer -
The Plus: You will be able to shoot your weapon without being seen on the UAV both in hardcore and softcore game modes.
The Minus: The silencer will weaken the "window" mentioned above, requiring more hits to kill your target.
Used On: Pistols, Assault Rifles, SMGs

Grip -
The Plus: Drops recoil on a weapon to allow quicker and more accurate hip firing.
The Minus: You lose your first level perks. Can be seen on UAV. Must use iron sites on weapon.
Used On: LMGs and Shot guns.

Red Dot Scope (RDS)-
The Plus: Greater field of view over iron sites and a red dot to place on targets for accurate shooting.
The Minus: No other benefit to scope. Can still be seen on UAV.
Used On: LMGs, Shotguns, Assault Rifles, and SMGs

ACOG Scope -
The Plus: Zoomed in scope and deadly accureate /\ (arrow) to place on targets to fire at.
The Minus: Adds sway to weapon making it hard to shoot at times. Can still be seen on UAV. Tunnel vision from scope.
Used On: Sniper Rifles, Assault Rifles, and SMGs
