Tweaking CoD4 Ive been playing on some servers and my ping has been a bit high. Ive been researching it and found that there are some settings that can be changed to improve performance. This is what you need to do:
First, you need to make sure your connections are good and everything is stable the way you are. (no, not your mental stability) You need to be able to open the console, by hitting the ~ key. If you cant, you can enable it in your options.
You need to turn on the Lag-O-Meter. You do this by typing \cg_drawlagometer 1
Then go into a game and play. There are two graphs colored BLUE and GREEN. If you see a lot of yellow in your blue bar, that seems to mean your graphics card is not keeping up. You can try to tweak that with updated drivers and stuff like that.
The bottom bar is your network connection. Lots of yellows and reds are bad and means your having packet loss. If you get a lot of green, you can enter in this command: \cl_maxpackets 100 (Default 35 and you can go up to 100)
This command is used to send more than 35 packets. I havent figured out if that is a second or not, but it does help to raise it. On our server my ping was around 98ms. I raised it to 70 and it is now around 60ms. Thats a pretty big improvement.
To help stop punkbuster from reporting to the mother ship all the time, you can enter in this command: \pb_sleep 500
If it works well for you, you need to save the command by typing: \pb_writecfg
One more thing you can try. Now I have to warn you, when I tried this, I started getting weird lag and so I turned it back on. CoD4 sends the data TWICE. In case a packet is corrupted or lost, the server already has a backup packet. I know, its weird. The command to turn it off is: \cl_packetdup 0 (Default is 1)
Now my lagometer said I could turn it off, but it acted strange, so I put it back and the problem went way.
ALSO, I turned and tweaked all these commands one at a time and played for a while to see the difference each one made with my ping, gameplay, and the lagometer. Setting my packets sent to 100 caused lag, I found 70 was my sweet spot. You MAY be able to do 100 or you may be able to do 50. You will have to try it out.
