An inmate computer hacker was "hired" to write a program, but he hacked the network instead.

Zoom

Oh the irony. Apparently, somebody in the UK prison system didn't understand the term "hacker," especially when it applied to 27-year-old prison inmate Douglas Havard. The local governors, wanting to launch an internal TV station within the facility, needed someone to code a special program to make their dreams come true. Havard had the knowledge to provide what they needed, and thus landed the "job."

Currently Havard is serving six years for stealing millions of dollars through online credit card fraud at Ranby Prison, close to Retford, Nottinghamshire, England. While left unguarded, pretending to write the required program, Havard hacked into the system's hard drive and set up a series of passwords that ultimately locked everyone out of the network.

"It's unbelievable that a criminal convicted of cyber-crime was allowed uncontrolled access to the hard drive," someone within the prison system told The Mirror. "He set up such an elaborate array of passwords it took a specialist company to get it working."

An official spokesperson for the prison said that the breach was under investigation, however typically prisoners are not allowed unsupervised access to computers. "The prisoner was not able to access records of any other prisoners," the official said.

I bet ya he saw something that was a file of someone. but really how low can you go if you got to get a inmate to do your programming when they could've just hired a company like they did to fix the problemn.

Yeah, why hire somebody when you can have someone do it for free instead.

Oh so they do pay them, my bad...but still, that's only a small fraction of what it would cost to pay outsourced people to do it for.

I think TOP PAY is either  $37 or $57 a month
some jobs do have better perks than others
working outside vs cleaning the bathrooms LOL

Either way that sounds like some rock trash, but I guess if you're in prison you don't have much choice.

You have to work a month to get two packs of cig, cause you know they cost a fortune in there.  Probbly why everyone sells contraband instead of working.

you need to work in order to qualify for good time or 1/2 time (early release)
your good time does not start till you have a job so everyone wants to have a job.
I do believe that Federal time does not give you good time

as far as contraband =
smokes, drugs , creatine pills, porno mags ,
 lighters .....
everything that the prison will not let you have

they go for about 10 times the street value  LOL

That is an insanely high number, never knew that many people go to prison.  Where do they keep them all?

not saying that they all go to prison but are in the system

I think there is a prison every 50-100 miles as the crow fly's through out California  Shocked

all the prisons are over crowded I think they are at 150% full
It is always in the news about this and especially with the swine flue

That is nuts, but I really don't know what the solution is, I mean obviously all these people did something that landed them in prison so they need to server their time.  But you hate to build more prisons because that just cost the taxpayer (upstanding citizens) more money that they shouldn't be paying in the first place.  I guess the real answer is to use the prisoners for work that they cities, counties, and state need to do that would otherwise cost them money.  Like jobs that require manual labor, however, then if you do that then there is a shortage or work and jobs.  No real solution I guess.  I do think that they should eliminate death row, if you get sentenced to the death penalty then you get put to sleep within the week.  I'm sure death row inmates are taking up their fair share of space and resources.  Sounds insensitive of me I know but you have to remember that you don't get the death penalty for no reason.  They did some VERY bad stuff to get that.

I have to agree with the death penalty
and that they should not take 10-15 years to get the injection.
as far as the petty stuff ( driving on suspended, minor drug charges, ect.)
we should try and educate and try and help the people
rather than locking them up for stealing a candy bar or
having a drug addiction that needs there problems addressed
and to be rehabilitated.  Locking them up does no good
cause they will be right back as soon as they get out.
bottom line is that everyone has choices and it is up to us
to make the right ones or pay the piper

The problem is the taxpayer is paying the price not the offender.
